FAQs

This FAQ page is a great place to find info, tips and help. Just make sure you’ve read your Owner’s Guide before using your unit. Some of the content below is date code specific. Please match your product’s date code with the information provided below.

Warming Plate

Why is there no warming plate for the thermal carafe?
The thermal carafe has double-walled insulation, which keeps heat locked inside. The insulation barrier means the heat from the warming plate will not reach inside the carafe, nor affect the temperature of the coffee.

Power

Where is the on/off button?
For original units, there is no off button on the CF080 series and CF085 series. However, on the multi-serve dial on newer units, there is an off selection.

Set Up

How do I remove and insert the brew basket?
The brew basket can be removed from the brewer by pulling it straight towards you, and lifting the brew basket at a slight upward angle (similar to a cabinet drawer). To reinsert, align the brew basket with the rails and slide it back into the brewer until it clicks into place.

How to prepare your Ninja Coffee Bar® for a brewing cycle.
To brew a half carafe or full carafe, place your carafe below the brew basket and fill the reservoir with water. Then insert a #4 paper filter or the permanent filter into the brew basket, and add your favorite coffee using the Ninja Smart Scoop. After adding the water and coffee, choose a brew size and brew type.

If you want to pour a cup of coffee before the brew is complete, you can close the Drip Stop and remove your carafe to pour a cup. Remember to replace the carafe and open the Drip Stop when you’re done. You can also use the Drip Stop to stop the brew basket from dripping coffee at the end of the brew.

If you want to brew a travel mug, you can place larger cups and travel mugs directly on the base of the unit.

If you want to brew a cup, lower the cup platform below the brew basket and place your cup on the platform, following the same instructions above.

Cleaning

How to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar®
Follow the step-by-step instructions below to walk through the steps on how to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar.

Step 1: To begin cleaning your Ninja Coffee Bar, unplug your unit to locate the Date Code on the metals prongs.
At the end of the power cord, there will be a 4-digit number engraved on the outside of one of the metal prongs. This is the Date Code of your unit, which tells you the date your unit was produced. For reference, see the diagram below:

Step 2: Once you know the 4-digit Date Code of your unit, select the corresponding link below.
Once you click the link, we will provide you a set of cleaning instructions with a downloadable Infographic PDF for your records followed by detailed instructions on how to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar.

Date code ending in “16”, where the first two numbers are between 00-25, or ends in “15”
Date code ending in “16”, where the first two numbers are between 26-52

Step 3: Follow the cleaning instructions below to clean and descale your Ninja Coffee Bar.

Select the Full Carafe size and set the carafe beneath the brew basket.

(RECOMMENDED) Use a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffee maker cleaning and follow the directions on the package. Fill the water reservoir up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line. OR Fill the water reservoir to the Travel Mug line with white vinegar, then fill the rest of the reservoir with water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line. IMPORTANT: Use only white vinegar.

Once the water reservoir is filled with your cleaning solution and water mixture, press the CLEAN button.

The Clean Cycle takes approximately 8 minutes to fully descale and clean the machine. Once the Clean Cycle is complete, empty and rinse the carafe and thoroughly clean the water reservoir to remove any cleaning solution that could affect the flavor of your coffee. Fill the reservoir with fresh water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line and set the carafe beneath the brew basket. Press the CLEAN button to flush the system. Discard the water in the carafe and repeat the flush stage one additional time. After the second flush stage, discard the water in the carafe and clean the carafe thoroughly before next use.

NOTE: If the CLEAN light illuminates again, then calcium buildup is still present. Repeat the steps above with a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffee maker cleaning and the CLEAN light will automatically shut off when your brewer is clean. If the problem persists, consider using the Enhanced Clean Cycle.

Please call Customer Service at 1-866-826-6941 to purchase descaling solution or if the brewer needs any servicing.

Step 3: Follow the cleaning instructions below to clean and descale your Ninja Coffee Bar.

NOTE: Pressing the CLEAN button again during the clean cycle will cause the machine to brew through all remaining cleaning solution; however, your machine will not be properly descaled.

To clean and descale your Ninja Coffee Bar:

  1. Select the Full Carafe size and set the empty carafe beneath the brew basket.
  2. (Recommended) Use a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffeemaker cleaning and follow the directions on the package. Fill the water reservoir up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line (43 oz.). OR Fill the water reservoir to the Travel Mug line (16 oz.) with white vinegar, then fill the rest of the reservoir with water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line (43 oz.). IMPORTANT: Use only white vinegar.
  3. Once the water reservoir is filled with your cleaning solution and water mixture, press the CLEAN button.

NOTE: The clean cycle takes approximately 60 minutes.
  4. Your Ninja Coffee Bar will deliver a small amount of cleaning solution to distribute it through the system. It will then pause for a half an hour as a 30-minute timer on the clock display counts down. The Ninja Coffee Bar will then deliver additional cleaning solution, and pause while another 30-minute timer counts down.

CAUTION: DO NOT remove carafe at any time throughout the clean cycle. DO NOT press any buttons during this 1-hour period, as this will cancel all progress of the cleaning.
  5. After one hour, your Ninja Coffee Bar will discharge the remainder of the cleaning mixture into the carafe. Upon completion, the Ninja Coffee Bar will beep, and a flush message (“FLUS”/“LUSH”) will appear on the clock screen for a 15 minute timeframe.

NOTE: You must initiate the Flush stage (see steps 6-8) within the 15 minute timeframe or else the clean light will immediately come back on.
  6. Empty and thoroughly clean the carafe and water reservoir by following the cleaning instructions in the Care & Maintenance section of this Owner’s Guide. This removes any cleaning solution that could affect the flavor of your coffee.
  7. Fill the reservoir with fresh water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line (43 oz.) and set the empty carafe beneath the brew basket.
  8. Within the 15 minute timeframe, and while the clock display reads “FLUS”/“LUSH”, press the CLEAN button once to begin the Flush stage. The Flush stage takes approximately 8 minutes.

NOTE: If the clock screen does not display “FLUS”/“LUSH”, or the CLEAN button was pressed twice during this timeframe canceling the Flush stage, you will need to repeat the clean cycle (steps 1-5).
  9. Upon completion of the Flush stage, the CLEAN light will turn off. Discard the water in the carafe, and thoroughly clean it to remove any cleaning solution that could affect the flavor of your coffee.

NOTE: If taste remains affected by cleaning solution, please run a Full Carafe, Classic Brew with water only (no coffee grounds).

NOTE: If the CLEAN light illuminates again, then calcium scale buildup is still present. Repeat the steps above and the CLEAN light will automatically shut off when your brewer is clean. If the problem persists, consider using the Enhanced Clean Cycle.

Please call Customer Service at 1-866-826-6941 to purchase descaling solution or if the brewer needs any servicing.

The Clean light came on. What cleaning solution should I use to clean my Ninja Coffee Bar®?
The Clean button illuminates when your Ninja Coffee Bar® senses there is calcium buildup in your machine. Follow the steps in the "How to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar® FAQ. Be sure to allow the brewer to cool before cleaning. Do NOT immerse the coffeemaker into water or any other liquid. To keep your brewer brewing hot, rich, and smooth coffee, cleaning is recommended before or as soon as the Clean button illuminates.

For the most effective cleaning, we recommend using a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffeemaker cleaning. Alternately, fill the water reservoir to the travel mug line (16 oz.) with only white vinegar. This method is effective for mildly scaled machines.

Descaling solution can be found on our website: http://www.ninjakitchen.com/accessories

    Brewing Coffee

    My coffee isn't hot enough.
    Try these tips:
    • When using a ceramic cup, we recommend pre-heating the cup by running it under hot water from the sink. When using a travel mug, put the top on as soon as the brew cycle is completed.
    • When using the glass carafe, ensure the brew-through lid is on correctly and securely fastened. This helps maintain the carafe's temperature. Not using the brew-through lid, or not having the lid on properly, could allow heat to escape from the carafe, causing the coffee to cool rapidly.

Why is the second cup that I brewed hotter than the first cup?
After brewing the first cup, the Ninja Coffee Bar® is pre-warmed. This enables any following brews to be slightly hotter. For a hotter first cup, after plugging in and powering on your brewer, allow 3 minutes for your brewer to pre-heat.

How can I pause the brew cycle to pour a cup before it has finished?
To pause the brew cycle, simply move the Drip Stop toggle to the closed position (denoted by the image of a water droplet with a slash). This stops the flow of coffee from the brew basket. After pouring your cup, quickly return the vessel and open the Drip Stop to continue brewing.

CAUTION: NEVER open the brew basket while the Ninja Coffee Bar® is brewing. Scalding may occur if the brew basket is removed during brewing cycles.

There is "mud" or sediment in my coffee.
If there is sediment at the bottom of the brewed coffee, this may be due to using finely ground coffee in a permanent filter. To reduce the amount of sediment in your coffee, try using a slightly coarser grind or a paper filter.

If you're still finding sediment in your coffee, make sure the brew basket did not overflow. If there are too many grounds in the brew basket, the grounds will flow into an overflow channel designed to make sure overflow is captured in the brew vessel.

For information, watch this video: What filter should I use: Taste vs. Sediment

How do I make milder coffee?
For milder coffee, try the Classic Brew setting using light roast beans, with a paper filter in your brew basket (rather than the permanent metal filter). If you want an even milder flavor, you can put less coffee in the brew basket—just keep in mind that grounds do absorb liquid during the normal brew cycle, so you will wind up with a less concentrated, larger cup of coffee.

How do I make stronger coffee?
For stronger coffee, try the Rich Brew setting using dark roast beans, with the permanent filter in your brew basket (rather than a paper filter). If you want an even bolder flavor, you can add more coffee grounds in the brew basket—just keep in mind that the additional grounds do absorb liquid, so you will wind up with a more concentrated, smaller cup of coffee.

    What impacts coffee brew volume?
When you make hot coffee, the coffee grounds will absorb some water, resulting in slightly less brewed coffee than the amount of water used. The more coffee you use, the more water will be absorbed. Additionally, our wide-bottommed carafe holds most of the coffee at the base, which helps control the temperature more evenly.

If you are experiencing inconsistent brew volume, we recommend you run a Clean cycle. Please refer to the "How to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar®" FAQ.

How to use the Ninja Easy Frother
    1. Start by filling the glass jar with cold milk (no more than 6 ounces). For Cold Froth Specialty Beverages, skip to Step 2. For Hot Froth Specialty Beverages, see instructions below.
      • Microwave milk warming times:
      • 700-900 watts: 60-75 seconds
      • 1000-1200 watts: 45-60 seconds
      • IMPORTANT: Remove the plastic base and frothing mechanism prior to placing the glass jar in the microwave.
      • CAUTION: Glass surface may be hot to touch after heating the liquid in the microwave. Use care in handling the jar.
    2. Place the frother press into the glass jar and secure the lid. Note: Ensure the pouring holes are turned away from spout lid when frothing to prevent milk splashing out.
    3. Pump the frother press 10 to 20 times in quick, quarter-second lengths to create thick and luxurious foam for your specialty drink. 10-15 pumps will result in a looser foam with microfoam: this is great for lattes and flat whites. 15-20 pumps will result in a thicker, more sturdy foam: this is great for cappuccino-style drinks.
    4. When pouring the milk/foam, use a soon to get all the foam from the bottom of the glass jar. Enjoy your frothed milk or cream in your favorite Ninja Coffee Bar® beverages.

    What is Thermal Flavor Extraction®?
Many variables go into brewing the perfect cup of coffee. Three of those variables—temperature, pre-infusion, and saturation—are difficult to manage on your own. Our Thermal Flavor Extraction® Technology automatically controls them for you.

    How It Works:
Temperature: Water is heated to the ideal temperature for coffee.
Pre-Infusion: Grounds are evenly saturated, then given time to bloom.
Saturation: Grounds are saturated again for even and consistent extraction.

    Set Up

There is water left in the reservoir
After a brew, you may notice leftover water in your reservoir after filling to the minimum fill line of the size selected. The water reservoir markings are minimum fill lines that indicate if there is enough water for the proper brew size in the reservoir, but all brew styles use different amounts of water to create the proper flavor and concentration. Auto-iQ One-Touch Intelligence will only use the water needed for the brew size and style selected. Please note that the system is designed to always leave some water remaining in the reservoir after a brew. This to protect the boiler from boiling dry, and helps extend the life of your machine.

    Brew Volume

My cup or travel mug overflowed.
The Ninja® Coffee Brewer is designed to dispense the following amounts on Classic Brew:
    • Cup - 9.5 oz.
    • Travel - 14 oz.

If your cup overflowed, please be sure that the cup can hold over 12 oz. of liquid, and your travel mug can hold over 16 oz.

NOTE: On Rich Brew and Over Ice Brew there will be less volume dispensed.

If your Ninja® Coffee Brewer has gradually increased the volume dispensed, we recommend running the Clean cycle with a descaling solution specifically formulated for coffeemaker cleaning.

    Brewing Coffee

There is sediment in my coffee.
Hmm, this could be due to finely ground coffee in the permanent filter. To reduce the amount of sediment in your coffee, try using a slightly coarser grind or a paper filter.

If you’re still finding sediment in your coffee, make sure the brew basket did not overflow. If there are too many grounds in the brew basket, the grounds will flow into an overflow channel designed to make sure overflow is captured in the brew vessel.

For information, watch this video: What filter should I use: Taste vs. Sediment

I tried to start a brew cycle and my Ninja Coffee Bar® is beeping.
If your unit beeps five times when you attempt to initiate a brew cycle, there are two common reasons:
    • The drip stop is in the closed position. Toggle the drip stop to the open position, and re-select your brew size and type to start the brew again
    • There is no water in the reservoir. Fill the water reservoir up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line, then re-select your brew size and type to start the brew again

If your Ninja Coffee Bar® is still beeping, it may be time to run the Clean cycle. Please refer to the "How to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar®" FAQ under Product Care.

My brew cycle is taking too long.

If the brew cycle is taking longer than normal, run a Clean cycle with the descaling solution.

The brewing cycle produced less coffee than expected.
Before brewing, make sure the Drip Stop toggle is set to the open position, denoted by the water droplet image, and the Clean light is off. If your brew cycle is not completing, it may be time to clean and descale your machine. Refer to cleaning instructions.

Before removing your cup, make sure you allow the Ninja Coffee Bar® to complete its full brew cycle. It will beep when finished. Each brew has a pre-infusion cycle with varying times. The brew will begin, stop, and be quiet for a short period of time before it begins again. This process is used to evenly saturate the coffee grounds.

For a single cup on Classic Brew, we recommend using a 12 oz. cup. The extra space ensures that you can comfortably add cream/sugar and carry your cup without spilling. Use a 16 oz. vessel for Travel Mug. Note that Rich Brew and Over Ice Brew will yield smaller and more concentrated amounts than Classic Brew.

Be aware that coffee grounds absorb water during normal operations; using more than the recommended amount of coffee grounds will result in less coffee. For the best experience, we recommend using the double-sided Ninja Smart Scoop, with no more than 3 small scoops (3 tbsp.) for Cup/XL Cup; 5 small scoops (5 tbsp.) for Travel/XL Multi-serve; 4 big scoops (8 tbsp.) for Half Carafe; or 6 big scoops (12 tbsp.) for Full Carafe.

The voltage in your home's electrical system and the type of water used can also influence the amount of coffee the Ninja Coffee Bar® will yield. We recommend using cold water, as putting hot water directly into the water reservoir will yield slightly less coffee. High voltage will also yield slightly less coffee. Try moving to a different outlet, especially if you have an older electrical system in your building.

I didn't put in enough water, and my Ninja Coffee Bar® started beeping in mid-cycle. Can I just add more water and keep going?
To ensure the best possible coffee, a new brew cycle is needed. Refill the water reservoir to the correlating fill line for your brew size, or up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line. Empty the brew basket and the brewing vessel. Place the empty vessel beneath the brew basket, insert fresh coffee grounds in the brew basket, and start your brew cycle again.

My brew cycle will not start.
Make sure the unit is powered on, and the display is illuminated. If there are no lights, it means the machine is not getting power. Try a different outlet and press the Power button. Check to make sure there is water in the water reservoir.

Make sure the Drip Stop is open, as the machine will beep 5 times and the brew cycle will not start if the Drip Stop is in the closed position. If the Drip Stop LED is illuminated, and the Drip Stop is in the open position, it means the brew basket was inserted incorrectly. Reinsert the brew basket by aligning it with the rails, then slide it into the brewer until it clicks in place.

If your Ninja Coffee Bar® beeps 5 times, this could indicate that there is not enough water in the reservoir. Please refill the water reservoir, and reselect your brew size and type to restart the brew cycle.

If the above actions have not corrected the beeping, it may be time to run the Clean cycle. Please refer to the Care & Maintenance section.

NOTE: The brew will begin, stop, and be quiet for a short period of time before it begins again. This pre-infusion process is used to evenly saturate your coffee grounds.

My Ninja Coffee Bar® just started to make coffee by itself and it spilled everywhere.
The Ninja Coffee Bar® is equipped with a delay brew feature which allows you to program a brew cycle for a later time. It is likely that a delayed brew cycle was selected and the vessel that was to be brewed into was not left in place to receive the coffee. To temporarily stop the flow of coffee, move the drip stop tab on the brew basket to the closed position (denoted by a water droplet icon with a slash through it) to stop the brew cycle. Power off the unit to cancel the Delay Brew.

NOTE: Allow the brew basket (and warming plate for certain models) to cool before cleaning.

My Ninja Coffee Bar® started beeping right after I tried to start a brew.
If there is no water in the reservoir tank, refill with the appropriate amount of water, and start a new brew cycle.

If there is water in the tank and the LED drip stop light is illuminated, then the drip stop is on. If a brew cycle starts with the drip stop on, the Ninja Coffee Bar® will start to beep after 20 seconds and will continue until the drip stop is opened, or six minutes has passed, at which time the brew will be canceled.

Turn off the drip stop by moving the tab on the brew basket to the open position, denoted by the image of the water droplet. Once the drip stop is open, start a new brew cycle.

If these two steps have not resolved the issue, run a Clean cycle by following the directions in the "How to clean & descale your Ninja Coffee Bar®" FAQ under product care.

    The water reservoir is leaking.
Water may drip from the reservoir when it is removed. Not to worry, this is a normal occurrence. Simply use a dry cloth to wipe away the water droplets from the machine after it has cooled.
Do not over-fill the water reservoir. Fill the water up to, but not exceeding, the Max Fill line.

The brew basket drips even after the brew cycle is completed.
Once the brew cycle is complete, move the drip stop to the closed position (denoted by the image of a water droplet with a slash through it) before removing your brewing vessel.

The brew basket is overflowing—water and/or coffee grounds are coming out of the top and down the sides.
The bottom opening of the brew basket is clogged. This can happen with finely ground coffee, or if too many coffee grounds were put into the basket. Remove the basket carefully, discard the coffee grounds, and rinse the entire brew basket (and permanent filter, if applicable) with water to remove any grounds remaining inside. Do NOT touch the basket until it has completely cooled, as the water will be very HOT. Clogging of the brew basket can also occur when using the permanent filter in conjunction with a paper filter. When using a paper filter, do not also use the permanent filter.

The paper filter is folding over when I put the brew basket in the Ninja Coffee Bar®.
The Ninja Coffee Bar® is designed to take a #4 cone filter. Be sure you are using this size and shape, as larger sizes may fold over. If not, allow the brew basket to cool before handling. The paper filters are thicker on two edges. Fold those edges along the crease (once along the bottom and once along the side) before inserting into the brew basket. Alternatively, you can wet the sides of the paper filter to temporarily adhere it to the brew basket.

NOTE: When using a paper filter, do not also use the permanent filter.

There is no water coming out of the bottom of the brew basket into my cup.
If the drip stop LED light is illuminated, then disengage by moving the drip stop tab on the brew basket from the closed position to the open position, denoted by the icon of a water drop with no slash through it.

The bottom opening of the brew basket may be clogged. This can happen with finely ground coffee, or if too many coffee grounds were put into the basket. Remove the basket carefully, discard the coffee grounds, and rinse the entire brew basket (and permanent filter, if applicable) with water to remove any grounds remaining inside. When using a paper filter, do not use the permanent filter.

The Ninja Coffee Bar® is equipped with Auto-iQ technology that includes a pre-infusion feature. This means there will be a short delay after you start your brew cycle where water is saturating with your coffee grounds in the brew basket to enhance the flavor of the coffee.

If problem persists, please wash out your brew basket and run a Clean cycle.

Why does the Hot Surface indicator light sometimes not turn on?
The HOT SURFACE light is a safety feature that will illuminate when the warming plate is hot. If you leave your brewing vessel on the Intelligent Warming Plate for an extended period, the HOT SURFACE indicator may illuminate, even if the Stay Warm function has not been initaited. The HOT SURFACE light will remain on until the warming plate has reached a safe temperature. DO NOT touch the surface when this light is illuminated.

Why is my Over Ice Brew not cold?
The Over Ice Brew is designed to brew hot coffee over ice to lock in the flavor for rich, smooth iced coffee. Make sure your cup, travel mug, or carafe is filled all the way to the top with ice cubes.

We strongly recommend using ice cubes when making iced coffee. Shaved and crushed ice have different packing characteristics. Because of this, you should NOT use shaved or crushed ice, as the vessel used may overflow once coffee is brewed over the ice.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT use hot water in the water reservoir. We recommend cool, fresh, filtered water.

    Frother

How to use the Ninja Easy Frother?
    1. Start by adding 6 oz. or less of cold milk to the glass jar. For cold froth, skip to Step 2. For hot froth, see instructions below.
      • Microwave milk warming times:
      • 700-900 watts: 60-75 seconds
      • 1000-1200 watts: 45-60 seconds
      • IMPORTANT: Remove black frother press prior to placing the glass jar in the microwave.
      • CAUTION: Glass surface will be hot to touch after heating the liquid in the microwave. Use care when handling the jar.
    2. Place the frother press into the glass jar and secure the lid. NOTE: Ensure the pouring holes are turned away from spout lid when frothing to prevent milk splashing out.
    3. Pump the frother press for 20 to 30 seconds to create velvety-smooth microfroth for your specialty drinks. For best results, keep the bottom end of the frother press submerged below the surface of the milk while pumping.
    4. Pour microfroth into your mug or drinking glass. Top make a layered drink, pour the microfroth first and then brew over it. For more of an integrated drink, brew coffee first, then add microfroth.
    5. Enjoy your frothed milk or cream in your favorite Ninja Coffee Bar&Reg; beverages.

My Ninja Easy Frother came apart. How do I put it back together?
Reassembling the Ninja Easy Frother is simple. First, turn the pump/handle assembly upside down and hold it by the metal rod. Next, insert the spring, then the mesh with the curved edge facing down (so it looks like an umbrella). Finally, insert the plastic foot with the ribs facing up and turn clockwise to tighten. (If your frother has a separate nut, install that last. Make sure the nut is tight, or it could loosen and come off during the frothing operation.)

    My frother isn't frothing.
There are a few reasons this may be happening. First, it could just be the type of milk you’re using. Almond, soy, and other non-dairy milk types lack the essential fats that dairy milk has, so they will not produce the best results.

Secondly, If you recently disassembled your Ninja Easy Frother for cleaning, it could have been reassembled incorrectly, which will also affect the frother’s performance. For simple assembly instructions, see the FAQ answer for "My Ninja Easy Frother came apart. How do I put it back together?"

My unit beeps, but the brew cycle will not start.
There are a few reasons why the unit will beep, but a brew will not start:
  • Ensure the display is illimunated. If there are no lights illuminated, it means the machine is not getting power. Try a different outlet.
  • Check the Drip Stop, and make sure it is set to the open position (denoted by the image of a water droplet).
  • Ensure the brew basket is properly inserted and aligned.
  • Ensure there is water in the reservoir. If there is no water, and the boiler is too hot, the unit will beep and not start the brew in order to protect the boiler from overheating.
  • If the boiler has become scaled from excessive hard water usage without cleaning and got too hot, the unit will beep and not start the brew in order to protect the boiler from overheating. Please run a Clean cycle, following the instructions in the Owner's Guide or under the FAQ titled "How to clean and descale your Ninja Coffee Bar®."
