Jumpstart January 2014

A new year, a new you! Instead of weight loss goals or diet plans, why not focus on how you feel - not on how you look. A positive self-image and self-assurance is ultimately more fulfilling than losing a few pounds. Working from the inside out can improve many important aspects of our lives, whether it be physically, financially, emotionally or relationally. Let's improve our overall well-being with monthly lifestyle goals for a new and improved you! Here are 12 Ways to a New You! to feel good and look better in 2014!

12 WAYS TO A NEW YOU!

January – Take Inventory: Write down 5 strengths and 5 weaknesses. Enhance your strengths and work on your weaknesses in the month of January.

February – Love Yourself: Each day, look yourself in the mirror and give yourself a compliment. Whether it’s about your great smile, ability to cook, or awesome curves; say it over and over until you truly believe it.

March – Forget Perfection: We are never going to be perfect. Perfection is artificial; it doesn’t exist, so forgive yourself when mistakes are made and celebrate your achievements.

April – Challenge Yourself: Don’t settle or become complacent or you may never fulfill your true potential. Challenge yourself to hit your goal at work or learn a new skill.

May – Be Aware of Thoughts & Beliefs: What’s put out to the world is what you receive. Focus on optimism and replace negative thoughts with positive, accurate and constructive thoughts.

June – Be Open & Accept: Understand that people are different, with different personalities, lifestyles, opinions and views. Learn to accept others because judging is not constructive.

July – Make a Healthy Goal: Cut out fast food this month, aim to workout 3-4 times a week, or limit TV watching.

August – Be Realistic: If you told yourself, “I will be happily married with kids by age 25,” or “extremely wealthy by age 30,” and you did not achieve those goals, this doesn’t mean you are a failure. It means your goals may not be realistic. Set doable, practical expectations, even small ones at first, and enjoy reaching them.

September – Be Kind: Acts of kindness makes us feel good! Hold the door open for someone, compliment a stranger or pay for someone’s coffee today; a small act can make a big difference in everyone’s life, including yours!

October – Stand Up: Practice good posture, you will automatically look and feel more confident. Shoulders back, head up, make eye contact and you’re sure to leave a positive impression.

November – Do Something for Yourself: Get a massage, go on a mini getaway or read a good book. Do something that makes you happy and gives you inner peace.

December – Reflect: Look back on past experiences throughout the year and reflect on what you learned and ways you can grow. And lastly, be thankful for your family, friends and loved ones.

January Exercise Tips:

Lower Ab Leans – Stand upright on your knees with your toes tucked behind you; hold a dumbbell at your chest for added weight. Lower yourself backward 5-6 inches, keeping your back straight and torso tight. Return to the starting position and repeat 15 times.

Touchdown Pushups – While watching football, perform 7 pushups for every touchdown.

Inchworm Walk – With knees slightly bent, reach your hands to the ground and then slowly walk your hands in front of you until you are in a pushup position. Next, inch your feet toward your hands and repeat the exercise 5 times.

Pistol Lunge – Stand with your arms stretched out in front and then raise your right leg 5 inches off the floor. Flex your right ankle, hips back, then lower your body while keeping your leg raised. Perform 3 sets of 10 for each leg.

Superman – Lie on your stomach and simultaneously raise your arms and legs off the ground to form a curve in the body. Hold for 20 seconds and release. 3 sets of 20 seconds.

January Health Tips:

Water Wonders – Drinking one glass of water before going to bed may reduce risk of stroke or heart attack.

The Scale is Your Friend – Exercising in the morning has been associated with better memory function throughout the day!

Laugh it Up – Laughing reduces heart disease, helps you lose weight, decreases stress and makes you look young!

Call Back – When your cell phone battery is low, avoid answering phone calls – the radiation emitted can be up to one thousand times stronger. Wait until your battery is charged!

Beat Night Cravings – We seem to snack most at night when we're comfy, watching our favorite TV show. Try to beat these cravings by playing cards, doing a crossword puzzle or anything that keeps your brain and hands busy.
