Lovin' February 2014

February is filled with love, romance, flowers and a plethora of sweet treats! As yummy as Valentine’s Day sweet gifts may be, this is the perfect month to gift yourself with treats that are actually good for your heart. Wrap up any of these gifts in a paper Valentine for friends or gift them to yourself!

“10 Gifts for Your Heart” - Cupid endorsed, of course!

Steel Cut Oats – Start your day with a hearty bowl of steel cut oats. These oats are full of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, potassium and fiber – helping to lower bad cholesterol and keep arteries clear.

Kale – These dark leafy greens contain tons of heart healthy antioxidants and work with your body to produce a protective protein that keeps plaque from adhering to your arteries.

Red Wine – One glass of red wine may support blood vessel flexibility and reduce the risk of unwanted clotting; similar to the effect of aspirin. Always keep moderation in mind, more than one glass a day can be harmful to your health.

Salmon – Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, salmon contains the very powerful antioxidant, “carotenoid astaxanthin.” Aim for 2 servings of salmon a week for a heart healthy boost!

Avocado – This yummy fruit possesses healthy fat and can lower LDL levels (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL levels (good cholesterol) in your body. Add avocado to a salad or sandwich for a healthful treat.

Berries – These juicy fruits are full of anti-inflammatories which can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Pomegranates – The juice in pomegranates have been found to activate an enzyme that breaks down oxidized cholesterol, blocking the progression of plaque. This juice also potentially reverses the buildup of plaque. Drink up!

Soy – Found naturally in tofu, edamame and tempeh – these foods are low in saturated fat and therefore a great source of lean protein that can aid in lowering cholesterol.

Oranges – Oranges are packed with soluble fiber pectin, which soaks up cholesterol in food, blocks absorption and counterbalances salt, keeping blood pressure under control.

Olive Oil – Use olive oil in place of butter when cooking to lower LDL cholesterol and reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

To ensure a healthy heart for years to come, be sure to incorporate these foods into your diet, limit or omit alcohol and smoking, and exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight. Be good to yourself this Valentine month!

February Exercise Tips:

Weights Come First – Perform weight lifting before your cardio activity. You will get more out of your workout when you have the energy and stamina to lift correctly.

Facedown Abs – Lie on your stomach; you may rest your head on your arms. Raise your legs 5-6 inches off the ground and begin crisscrossing your legs right over left. Perform 3 sets of 20 crisscrossing for a lower ab, back and glute workout.

Waist Whittler – Lie on your back with your knees in a table top position and arms extended out to the side. Squeeze legs together and begin rotating your knees to the left, keep abdomen tight, return to tabletop position and then rotate to the right. Continue this exercise 20-25 times.

Sumo Squats – Begin in the squatting position, raise your right leg, with knee still bent, about thigh height while balancing on opposite leg. Return right leg and then alternate, raising your left leg and balancing on opposite leg. Perform 50 sumo squats.

Jump Rope – It’s much harder than you think, if you don’t own a jump rope go out and purchase one. Jump rope for 10 minutes every day to get the heart pumping.

February Health Tips:

Love your Health – Instead of chocolate or candy – treat your sweetheart with flowers, candles, a poem or an active date such as bowling.

Know the Lingo – When dining out, beware of trigger words such as, “au gratin, en croute, creamy, crispy, battered, rich,” etc. These words are code for, “not healthy.”

No Carb Hour – Avoid carbs for at least an hour after exercise; this allows your body to break down stored body fat, instead of the carbs you just ingested.

Support It – Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. If you are in a toxic relationship or friendship, consider putting the brakes on it and head for more balanced relationship.

Put Down that Fork – Put your fork down in between bites. You will chew your food more thoroughly and allow more time for your stomach to tell your brain you’re full.
